Mayor Cheng: Identify the strengths of Smart and Internet of Things (IoT) businesses and looking forward to better integration of business policies and local governments

After reviewing the “Smart and Internet of Things (IoT) Business Development Policy for Taoyuan City” presentation given by the Department of Economic Development during the municipal administration meeting on March 16th, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan expressed that the development of Taoyuan’s Smart and IoT sector will be intimately connected to national projects of “Asia Silicon Valley” and Taiwan Productivity 4.0 Initiative. Hence, it would be necessary to identify key industries in Taoyuan that demonstrate significant advantages such as automotive manufacturing, equipment, transportation, and logistics. Any ongoing projects should also be linked with development plans initiated by the central government such as Taiwan Productivity 4.0 Initiative, memorandum for IoT development center, and the Community for Productivity 4.0 of Business Services Establishing effective links between industrial policies and local governments would be key towards success. Local governments had played limited roles in the past. Mayor Cheng hoped that these roles would be expanded in the future to build stronger ties between local governments and business policies established by the central government.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that ongoing projects, such as Youshih International Youth Entrepreneur Village, Aerotropolis World Trade Center, and Asia Exchange Center for Creative R&D Professionals shall be implemented according to plan. The Aerotropolis project and Qingpu Special District will serve as the Smart City demonstration area. Clear, tangible ideas must take precedence over vague concepts or slogans. In the case of Qingpu Special District, proper packages and plans must be established to attract professionals from around the world while providing excellent training and education.

Mayor Cheng has delegated relevant Taoyuan City Government departments to be in charge of discussing and implementing details of the plan. Everyone should remain on top of their schedule, actively support resource integration, and acquire the latest information. Projects that are still being formulated should be linked with those initiated by the central government in order to acquire resources and budgetary support.

Director-General of the Department of Economic Development, Chang Chang-tsai expressed that industries in Taoyuan city with basic advantages include automotive and automotive parts industries, computers, electronics, optical equipment and parts, industrial machinery and equipment maintenance and installation, transport and warehousing, functional fabrics, and environment protection for industries. Prioritized IOT development projects in the future include IOT (smart healthcare), high-end logistics and warehousing, green technology (electric vehicles, wind power, fuel cells, and so on), international exhibits, disaster prevention technology (smart architecture), and precision machinery (Smart Robot applications).
